The Aim
The aim of our school is to present an in-depth meditation training for modern times based on traditional sources.
Some important points we feel will be helpful.
- Teachings presented in English.
It is important to learn meditation for one's daily life. Meditation, traditionally, adapts to the culture it is introduced to. This is the intention of the great masters. In essence one does not change one's lifestyle to learn meditation but through meditation one's life naturally changes. Some phrases and prayers have transcended the language they originated in, such as the word 'Yoga' but even so we at Harmony of the Way try to keep these limited.
- Meditation is non-dogmatic.
Meditation is an experience of truth, not a set of beliefs. It is the experience of discovering who we are and bringing out our true potential. Meditation has many meanings and applications. We can say it is part of us, it is a skill, an ability, an art. Just as walking doesn't belong to any culture or religion, neither does examining our our mind. The experience of learning who we are cannot separate us from others.
- We don't need to learn another culture to understand meditation.
We emphasise this point because there are still many groups teaching meditation to English speaking people who require you learn another language. Some associate nationality with truth. Christian science or Tibetan Buddhism. Mediation has nothing to do with culture. Truth is truth and does not belong to any separate group or identity.
- What we learn is experience based.
Obviously while learning we have to use language and ideas. These ideas, practices and methods must be tested by one's own personal experience. Truth is verified scientifically through our own experience.
- We learn practices that lead to self sufficiency.
Our aim is to set people free. Through the methods and practices one learns at Harmony of the Way one can continue in meditation on one's own. One may choose to follow other teachings or become part of our community but that is a free choice. Basically one learns all the tools one needs to walk the path.
- We learn methods taught for generations.
Our claim that we are presenting traditional methods in a modern way can seem like an oxymoron. The tradition of meditation we teach is timeless. It is the same path for everyone. It is discovering your own Self. The teachings we offer are the same taught for millennia in an unbroken transmission. However, just as the Buddha himself taught different methods to different people, such as busy members of royalty and cow-herders. We have to present the teachings according to the circumstances of the students and their capacities.
- We learn many different methods to suit our needs not just one method to fit all.
Although, ultimately, there is only one outcome - to know the Self - in our tradition it is considered wise to present many different methods for the needs and capacities of people's current states of mind. The great masters of meditation all taught according to the needs of the students. Read more.
